Is SEO worth it for a small business in Cornwall?
For most Cornwall small businesses, SEO is worth it, but only if it is done properly and given time. The reason it pays is intent. Someone searching emergency electrician Truro is ready to book, not browsing. Rank for the right local terms and those searches turn into calls without paying per click. The catch is that, in our experience, SEO takes 4 to 6 months to build and rewards consistency, so it suits businesses that plan to be around, not those chasing a result next week. If you need leads this month, run Google Ads while the SEO builds underneath. Where SEO is rarely worth it is a business with no local search demand at all, which is unusual in Cornwall.
When SEO pays
SEO pays when people are already searching for what you sell. A homeowner with a burst pipe searches for a plumber near them and calls the first credible result. If your business appears there, the lead costs you no per-click fee, and the same page keeps working month after month.
It suits businesses that will still be trading in a year, have a clear local or specialist offer and can take on more work.
When it may not be worth it
If almost nobody searches for what you do, SEO has little to catch. The same is true if you cannot handle more enquiries, or if you need customers within weeks. In those cases fix capacity first, or use paid search for the short term.
SEO or Google Ads?
They do different jobs. Ads can send traffic as soon as a campaign is live, but stop when you stop paying. SEO is slower and builds up. Our Google Ads management starts at £400 a month for Search Starter, for campaigns on ad budgets of £500 to £1,500 a month. We never take a percentage of ad spend, and the ad budget itself is paid to Google on top.
A common sensible split is ads for leads now and SEO underneath for the longer term.
Working out whether it pays for you
Take what a new customer is worth to you and set it against the monthly fee. Illustrative only: if an average job is worth £500 to you and Essential SEO costs £299 a month, a single extra job a month more than covers it. Replace those numbers with your own before deciding.
Judge it on enquiries and booked work, not only on rankings.
Questions to ask yourself first
Can you take on more work if enquiries rise? Does your website say clearly what you do and where? Is your Google Business Profile complete? If the answer to any of these is no, fix that first, because SEO sends people to what you already have.
Also decide how you will measure it. Count enquiries and booked jobs from search, not only ranking positions.
A realistic way to start
Begin with the foundations: a complete Google Business Profile and a clear page for each main service and town. Then add helpful content and steady reviews. Review the enquiry numbers after a few months rather than a few weeks, because the effect builds slowly. If numbers are not moving after a fair period, ask your provider for a plain explanation of why.
What to ask any SEO provider
Ask what you get each month, who owns the work, how it is reported and how you leave. Our plans are rolling with no long-term contract. Details are on our SEO pricing page.
If you want a view on whether it would pay for your town and trade, the Cornwall SEO service page explains how we start.
