Part of our complete guide: Google Business Profile Setup Guide for UK Businesses

If your Google Business Profile isn’t showing, the most likely checks are verification, suspension, timing and a guideline problem. Google says only verified businesses can show their information on Maps and Search (Google help), so start there.

This guide is part of our Google Business Profile setup guide. It works through the causes in order, from quickest to check to slowest. Everything about Google’s rules is paraphrased from Google’s help pages, which we link to. Where Google doesn’t say, neither do we.

First, check it really is missing

Before you change anything, confirm the problem. Google’s help page suggests two checks: search for your business name plus the city, or use the Business tab in the Maps app while signed in to the account that manages the profile (Google help).

Searching for the name alone isn’t the same as searching for what customers type. A profile can appear for its own name and still not appear for “plumber Truro”. That second situation is about ranking, which we cover at the end.

Is the profile verified?

Google says only verified businesses can show their information on Maps and Search (Google help). If you never finished verification, that is your answer.

Google gives some timings. A verification review takes up to 5 business days, and postcard codes arrive within 14 days (Google verification help). If you are inside those windows, waiting is the correct step. If you are well outside them, check Google’s verification help page for what to do next rather than starting a second profile.

Has the profile been suspended or disabled?

Google says suspended or disabled profiles get a notification in the managing Google Account (Google help). Check the email address and the account that manages the profile for anything from Google.

If you find a suspension notice, the fix is an appeal, not a fresh profile. We cover the process in our guide to a suspended Google Business Profile. If you aren’t sure who manages the profile, our guide to the Google Business Profile manager role explains how access works.

Have you given it enough time?

Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month, and edits can take up to 3 days (Google help). If you created the profile last week, or changed your address yesterday, patience is a legitimate fix.

We don’t know how long your particular profile will take, and nobody outside Google does. Use Google’s stated limits as a guide, not a promise.

Does the profile break the guidelines?

A profile that breaks Google’s rules may be suspended, which brings us back to the previous check. Google’s guidelines say three things worth checking:

  • Virtual offices aren’t eligible.
  • P.O. boxes aren’t accepted.
  • Adding unnecessary information to the business name isn’t permitted and can lead to suspension.

Read your own listing with those in mind. If your business name has a service or a town added to it that isn’t part of the real name, correct it.

Showing, but not where you expect

Sometimes the profile isn’t missing at all. It shows for your name but not for the searches you want. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. More reviews and positive ratings can help (Google local ranking help).

Distance is the part you can’t change. Someone searching from the other side of the county will see different results from someone round the corner. That is how local results work, and it isn’t a fault with your profile.

A short checklist

  • Search your business name plus the city.
  • Check the Business tab in Maps while signed in to the managing account.
  • Confirm verification is complete, and allow Google’s stated times.
  • Look for a suspension notice in the managing account.
  • Allow up to 3 days for edits and up to a month for a new business.
  • Check the name, address type and categories against the guidelines.

Where we can help

If you’ve been through the list and the profile still isn’t where it should be, our local SEO services and local SEO in Cornwall pages explain how we work on this. You can also ask us to look at your profile. We can’t speak to Google for you, but we can tell you what we see against its published guidelines. For help from Google itself, see our guide to Google Business Profile support.
