Part of our complete guide: Google Business Profile Setup Guide for UK Businesses

If your Google Business Profile has been suspended, you can appeal through Google’s appeals tool. You’ll need evidence that matches your profile, and once the evidence form opens you have 60 minutes to submit it (Google suspension help).

This guide is part of our Google Business Profile setup guide. It covers what a suspension means, what to check, how to appeal and what not to do. Everything below about Google’s rules is paraphrased from Google’s own help pages, which we link to.

What a Google Business Profile suspension means

Google says it may suspend or disable profiles that don’t follow its guidelines (Google suspension help). In practice, a suspended profile stops working the way it should in Search and Maps, and you lose control of the listing until it is reinstated.

Google’s suspension page doesn’t list specific reasons. That means nobody outside Google can tell you for certain why your profile was suspended. What you can do is check your profile against the published guidelines, which is what the next section covers.

Common guideline breaches to check first

Google’s business profile guidelines set out what a profile should look like. These are the points most relevant to a suspension check:

  • Business name. The name should reflect your real-world business name. If you added keywords or a service area to your name, correct it.
  • Address type. Virtual offices aren’t eligible, and P.O. boxes aren’t acceptable. If your profile uses one, you have a problem.
  • Service-area businesses. If you travel to customers, Google says you should have one profile with a service area, not several profiles for different towns.
  • Categories. Google says to use as few categories as possible. A long list of loosely related categories goes against that.

We can’t say that any one of these caused your suspension, because Google doesn’t say. But if your profile breaks one of them, fix it before or alongside your appeal, and be ready to explain the correction. For the right setup from the start, see our setup guide.

How to appeal a suspension

Google provides an appeals tool for suspended profiles (Google suspension help). The steps in outline:

  1. Open Google’s suspension help page and follow its link to the appeals tool.
  2. Select the profile that was suspended.
  3. Follow the prompts. Google may ask you to send evidence that your business is real and matches the profile.
  4. Submit the appeal and wait for Google’s response, which comes by email.

We describe the tool in general terms because Google can change the screens. Follow the on-screen prompts and Google’s help page rather than a screenshot guide that may be out of date.

What evidence to prepare

Google gives examples of evidence you can provide: a business registration, a business licence, a tax certificate and a utility bill (Google suspension help). The name and address on your evidence must match your profile. If your profile says one thing and your documents say another, fix the mismatch before you appeal.

In our experience, the practical step is to gather these documents and save clear copies before you start the appeal. That brings us to the time limit.

The 60-minute rule

Once the evidence form is open, Google says it must be submitted within 60 minutes (Google suspension help). Don’t open the form until your documents are scanned, legible and to hand. If you open it and then go hunting for a utility bill, you may run out of time.

Don’t create a new profile

Google says not to create a new profile for the same business while an appeal is under review (Google suspension help). It is tempting, but follow the instruction and wait for the outcome of your appeal.

How long will it take?

Google’s suspension help page doesn’t state how long an appeal takes (Google suspension help). We haven’t found an official figure, so we won’t give one. Check the email address linked to your profile for Google’s reply.

Review restrictions are not the same as suspensions

Some owners confuse a review restriction with a suspension. Google says fake-engagement restrictions can take the form of a review suspension, unpublished ratings or a public warning, for a set period, and that Google emails the owner first (Google review restrictions help).

The difference matters because the fix is different. A review restriction relates to review activity. A suspension relates to the profile as a whole and is appealed through the appeals tool. Read the email from Google carefully to see which one you have. Also note that Google prohibits incentives for reviews (Google review policy), so don’t offer discounts or gifts in return for them.

After your profile is back

Once reinstated, review your profile so it stays within the guidelines. Check the name, address type, service area and categories. Then keep the profile maintained.
