How do I rank in the Google Map Pack in Cornwall?

The Google map pack, the three businesses shown on the map at the top of local results, is won mostly through your Google Business Profile and reviews. Google ranks it on three things: relevance, whether your categories and services match the search, distance from the searcher, and prominence, meaning reviews, activity and links. You cannot change distance, but you can win on the other two. Fully complete your profile, pick the right primary category, post regularly, and collect reviews steadily. The map pack converts better than almost anything else, because those searchers are ready to call.

How the map pack picks its three

Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what the person typed. Distance is how close you are to them, or to the town they searched for. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business looks, which comes from reviews, activity on your profile and mentions elsewhere online.

You cannot move your premises, so distance is fixed. Relevance and prominence are where a small Cornwall business can catch up with bigger competitors in a busy town.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Choose the primary category that matches the main thing customers search for, not the broadest label available. Add secondary categories for your other services, list those services, set accurate opening hours and add a service area if you travel to customers. Upload real photos of your work, premises and team.

Keep your business name, address and phone number identical on your profile, your website and every directory. Small differences confuse matching and weaken the signal.

Reviews: steady beats sudden

Ask every happy customer, ideally just after the job is done while it is fresh, and make it easy by sending the direct review link. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm, human voice. A steady trickle of genuine reviews looks healthier than a burst followed by silence.

Reviews should come from real customers. They are the one part of prominence you cannot shortcut.

Your website backs up your profile

Google looks at your website as well as your profile. A clear page for each service, naming the towns you cover, tells Google what you do and where. Our Local SEO Cornwall service covers the profile, citations and reviews, and our SEO Cornwall service covers the website side. The Essential SEO plan at £299 a month includes on-page optimisation for up to five pages.

Posts, photos and messages

Activity tells Google and customers that the business is open and looked after. Post updates, add new photos of recent work, answer questions people ask on your profile and reply to messages quickly. You do not need to post every day. A regular rhythm you can keep up is better than a burst you drop after a fortnight.

Tracking progress

Look at the calls, website clicks and direction requests Google shows to profile owners, and compare month to month. Also ask new customers how they found you. Rankings in the map pack differ from one street to the next, so a search from your own desk tells you less than the enquiries do.

Can you do this yourself?

Yes. Everything above is something an owner can do with a free profile and an hour or two a week. Where an agency helps is in the time it takes, the website pages that support the profile, and spotting what is holding a particular business back. If you want help, start with Local SEO Cornwall.

Common mistakes

The usual problems are the wrong primary category, an address or phone number that differs between sites, a profile that has not been touched in months and reviews left unanswered. All are cheap to fix and none needs a big budget.

As a rough guide, expect profile changes to show within the first month and map-pack shifts over the following two to three months. Results vary by town and trade.
