How to find the right SEO agency without getting ripped off. A genuinely honest guide.
Most βbest SEO agencyβ pages are just agencies listing themselves at number one. This one teaches you how to evaluate them properly β including us.
Search βbest SEO agency UKβ and you will find page after page of agencies ranking themselves at number one. It is self-serving nonsense and you know it.
This page is different. We are an SEO agency ourselves β Outcome Digital Marketing, based in Cornwall β and we think we do good work. But we would rather earn your trust by helping you make an informed decision than by shouting louder than everyone else.
What follows is a genuine buyer's guide. The criteria that actually matter, the red flags to watch for, and the questions you should ask any agency before signing anything. We have based this on Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO, industry data, and UK consumer protection law β not opinions.
Use this to evaluate us. Use it to evaluate our competitors. Use it however you like. The right agency for your business is the one that meets these standards β whoever that turns out to be.
Forget awards and self-proclaimed titles. These are the criteria that actually matter when choosing an SEO agency, drawn from Google's official hiring guide and industry best practice.
Do they show you exactly what they are doing each month? A good agency gives you full visibility into their work β not vague summaries. You should be able to see the keywords they are targeting, the links they are building, and the changes they are making to your site.
Real case studies with real numbers β traffic growth, ranking improvements, revenue impact. Not "we helped a client in the legal sector" with no verifiable detail. If they cannot show you proof, that is a problem.
Can they explain their approach in plain English? SEO is not magic. Any agency worth hiring should be able to walk you through their methodology without hiding behind jargon or vague "proprietary processes".
Monthly reports you can actually understand β not 40-page PDFs full of vanity metrics. Good reporting shows what was done, what changed, and what is planned next. You should get access to Google Search Console and Google Analytics, not just screenshots.
Monthly rolling contracts, not 12-month lock-ins. If an agency is confident in their work, they do not need to trap you. Under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, cancellation must be as easy as signing up.
Who actually does the work? Is it an in-house team or outsourced to freelancers you will never meet? You should know the name of the person working on your account and be able to speak to them directly.
Google publishes an official guide on hiring an SEO that includes specific warnings about dishonest practices. The CMA also provides guidance on misleading digital marketing claims. If you spot any of these, walk away.
Google themselves state: βNo one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.β This is directly from Google's official guide on hiring an SEO. If an agency promises this, they are either lying or do not understand how search works.
There are no secrets in SEO. Google publishes its Search Essentials openly. The fundamentals β technical health, quality content, relevant links, good user experience β are well documented. Any agency claiming secret methods is either doing something dodgy or dressing up basic work as something special.
Directory submission as a primary strategy died over a decade ago. Google's spam policies specifically list link schemes β including mass directory submissions β as a violation. An agency still promoting this is stuck in 2005.
If you are paying for SEO and cannot see what is being done, something is wrong. At a minimum, you should receive monthly reports covering work completed, ranking changes, traffic data, and next steps. Anything less is a red flag.
Link building is one of the highest-risk areas in SEO. Google's spam policies explicitly prohibit buying links, excessive link exchanges, and automated link programmes. If an agency will not disclose their link building methods, they may be doing things that put your site at risk of a manual action.
SEO at Β£99 per month does not exist as a real service. Industry surveys from Ahrefs (439 respondents) and SE Ranking (260 agencies) show that credible SEO typically costs Β£500βΒ£2,000 per month. Anything significantly below that is either automated rubbish, outsourced to someone being paid pennies, or a loss leader to lock you into an expensive contract later.
Google recommends ten specific questions to ask a prospective SEO. Here are six practical ones that cut straight to what matters. Print this list and take it to every agency meeting.
Not just a logo wall β actual data. Traffic growth, ranking improvements, lead increases. Google recommends asking to see examples of previous work and success stories.
You want a named contact, not a faceless team. Ask whether the work is done in-house or outsourced. Ask to meet the person who will actually be doing the work.
Ask to see a sample report before you sign anything. If it is full of jargon or vanity metrics you cannot act on, that tells you everything you need to know.
Check the notice period, any exit fees, and whether you keep the work that has been done. Monthly rolling contracts are the standard for agencies that are confident in their results.
This is the question that separates good agencies from dangerous ones. They should be able to explain their approach clearly and show you examples of links they have built for other clients.
A good agency gives you access to Google Search Console, Google Analytics, and ideally their rank tracking tool. If they want to keep you in the dark, ask yourself why.
Google's strongest advice: βRequest they corroborate recommendations with advice directly from Google β a documented Search Console help page, a Google blog post, or a forum response.β If an agency cannot back up their strategy with official sources, question it.

Credible SEO in the UK typically costs between Β£500 and Β£2,000 per month for small to mid-sized businesses. Freelancers charge Β£40βΒ£100 per hour, while agency consultants range from Β£70βΒ£300 per hour. Anything significantly below Β£500 per month is unlikely to deliver meaningful results. Our SEO pricing page breaks down exactly what you get at each level.
It depends on your business. If you serve a specific area, a local agency understands the geography, competition, and search patterns of your region. They can visit your business, meet face-to-face, and integrate local knowledge into your strategy. A national agency may have broader resources but less understanding of your local market. For most small and medium businesses, a local or regional agency offers better value and more personal service.
According to Google's own Developer Programs team, βSEOs need four months to a year to help your business first implement improvements and then see potential benefit.β Three to six months is a realistic minimum for an established site. If an agency is promising results in weeks, they are either setting unrealistic expectations or planning to use tactics that could harm your site long-term.
Recovery is possible, but it takes time and expertise. Google's manual actions documentation explains the process: identify the violation, fix the issue, then submit a reconsideration request through Google Search Console. A penalty recovery typically involves a thorough backlink audit, disavowing toxic links, cleaning up any on-site issues, and demonstrating compliance with Google's Search Essentials. It can take three to six months for a full recovery.
For most small and medium-sized businesses, a smaller agency often delivers better results. You are more likely to get senior-level attention rather than being handed to a junior account manager. Your account matters more to a small agency. The UK has over 7,700 digital advertising agencies β the vast majority are small teams. Size does not equal quality. What matters is their process, their transparency, and their results.
Some of it, yes. Google's SEO Starter Guide covers the fundamentals and is free to read. Basic on-page optimisation β titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, image alt text β is something most business owners can learn. Where it gets harder is technical SEO, link building, and content strategy at scale. We offer SEO audits and training sessions if you want to handle some of it in-house and bring in professional help for the rest.
Use the criteria on this page to evaluate us. Ask us the hard questions. If we are the right fit, you will know. If we are not, we will tell you.
